Feasibility of EMG-based control of shoulder muscle FES in C5 SCI
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigated the potential use of EMG recordings from voluntary shoulder muscles in individuals with C5 spinal cord injury to automatically control the stimulation to paralyzed shoulder muscles in a taskappropriate manner. A musculoskeletal model of the human shoulder and elbow was used in simulation to train an artificial neural network (ANN) to automatically generate appropriate stimulation patterns for the “paralyzed” muscles based on “voluntary” muscle activations. Substantial shoulder strength was provided by adding just two muscles (pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi), and the needed activations of these “stimulated” muscles could be predicted with reasonable accuracy using just two muscles (trapezius and rhomboids) as control sources.

Natural Control of Triceps Stimulation Using FES
Individuals with C5/C6 spinal cord injury have paralyzed elbow extensors, yet retain weak to strong voluntary control of elbow flexion and shoulder function. Previous studies have shown that functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the triceps provides sufficient elbow extension strength and control to greatly improve function. With triceps stimulation applied at a constant level, elbow angle...

Background: Muscle fatigue is an important issue in neuromuscular rehabilitation. Better control of this phenomenon would result in better prevention of its consequent physiological damages. Objective: To provide a mathematical representation of muscle fatigue as a function of time. Methods: We conducted this study by combining the EMG-based estimation methods of muscle activation with the availa...
متن کاملNormalized Electromyography of Shoulder Muscles during Selected Functional Tasks of Upper Limb in Patients with Shoulder Impingement Syndrome
Background & Aims: Precise muscle activity pattern is required to maintain normal shoulder function and any alteration in muscle activity can result in movement impairment. The purpose of this study was to assess normalized electromyography (EMG) of shoulder muscles during selected functional tasks of upper limb in patients with shoulder impingement syndrome. Methods: Test group consisted of 15...
متن کاملStudy of Kinematical Synergy of the Arm Joints for FES Control of Reaching Movements in a Plane
Patients with spinal cord injury in C5/C6 levels are capable of controlling the voluntary movements of the shoulder joints, but some muscles involved in movement of the elbow joint are paralyzed. By using FES, as well as an appropriate stimulation of paralyzed muscles, these patients can be assisted with their essential daily living activities. One of the major problems of using FES for reanima...
متن کاملOnline Estimation of Elbow Joint Angle Using Upper Arm Acceleration: A Movement Partitioning Approach
Estimating the elbow angle using shoulder data is very important and valuable in Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) systems which can be useful in assisting C5/C6 SCI patients. Much research has been conducted based on the elbow-shoulder synergies. The aim of this study was the online estimation of elbow flexion/extension angle from the upper arm acceleration signals during ADLs. For this, ...
